A lament about hearing aids

Jennifer Finney Boylan, The New York Times, wonders: “Glasses Are Cool. Why Aren’t Hearing Aids?

I can answer that for you Jennifer:

Hearing loss is stigmatized and hearing aids are expensive, rarely covered by insurance, and don’t work as well for hearing as glasses work for sight.

In short, there is nothing at all cool about an expensive bit of kit that doesn’t work that well and is assumed to be a device meant only for the elderly.

You’re welcome.

More info on stigma and style including hearing aid decorations, colorful sparkly earmolds and HA jewelry at http://www.hearinglikeme.com http://www.livingwithhearingloss.com and http://www.sweetheartshairdesign.com. Historically, consumers have chosen matchy matchy hair/skin color so mfgs phased out bright colors and cool designs that were options in the 1980s. If hearing care was equal to vision care, HAs would have color/pattern styles that trended with fashion like eyeglass styles do. For all ages.

It doesn’t because people think that only old people need hearing aids and manufacturers never consider they may want more colorful options. But another couple years of people abusing their ears with ear buds and things could change.

Stereotypes don’t help. Here are reasons why hearing aids are cool. By people with hearing loss who wear hearing aids. https://www.hearinglikeme.com/newsflash-hearing-aids-are-cool/

I think we mean the same thing. As you say, people listening to noise pollution, loud music or personal listening are going to lose their hearing. So when they get hearing aids, they can bedazzle them to maybe help them feel better that they could have prevented the hearing loss in the first place. Quiet cheers!

We also default to doing today that which will prevent hearing injury tomorrow. No matter how fabulous hearing aids become, they will never replace our natural hearing.
